Point Bonita Lighthouse

This past Saturday we spent the day in Sausalito, to spend time with my good ol' dad as an early birthday celebration for him. We started the day off with lunch at Fish, a casual, seafood restaurant that I found on trusty Yelp. Not only was the food delicious, but they are eco-conscious and make an effort to only buy and serve sustainable seafood - extra brownie points!

Mason jars for water. Oh, and my chardonnay.
Brentwood corn with sweet chili lime butter - SO good!
I ordered the crab sandwich which is like the West Coast's answer to the East Coast lobster roll. It was to die for! Nothing but crab meat, fresh herbs, the lightest coating of dressing, piled into a soft torpedo roll, accompanied by a pile of shoestring fries. There is not much else you need in life.

Heaven on a plate

After lunch, we made our way over to the Point Bonita Lighthouse. We had never visited before, but recommendations from friends and great pictures online had peaked our interest. You drive through a portion of the Marin Headlands and enjoy spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Even though I've lived here my whole life, and have seen this view from different angles, hundreds of times, it never ceases to take my breath away. I tried to get some good photos with my camera phone, but it was a hazy day and the pictures didn't do it justice.

The trail is only about 0.5 miles long (one way) and is an easy walk except for one very steep portion, but the views make it totally worth it.

Not pictured here: lots of harbor seals spotted along the way

A cool feature on the trail is a tunnel carved through a mountain, which you walk through. The kids loved this part!

When you emerge on the other side, you walk a little bit further and then you can see the lighthouse with a suspension bridge leading up to it. The lighthouse is still in active use by the Coast Guard, and for a few hours a day, you can go inside and read all about it's history in the SF Bay.

The strong winds made the bridge sway - exciting!

After exploring the lighthouse, taking lots of pictures and enjoying the gorgeous 360 degree views, we made the return trip back on the trail. Then we spent a couple of hours strolling through downtown Sausalito, browsing in shops and enjoying the warm summer weather. Another great family day well spent!

Summer Days

This summer I've had the luxury of being home because I'm still on sabbatical. It has been such a treat to get this time with both my sons and my nieces. Our days are pretty laid back, and vary from hanging out at home, to park visits, to watching movies, running errands and whatever else strikes our fancy that day. Whether it's mundane or something more exciting, I feel so fortunate to have the gift of time to spend with these kids. Here are snapshots of our day to day.

I jokingly referred to our days as "Camp Titi" (Titi being the name my nieces call me) and "Camp Mommy" since the kids were with me every day. I read somewhere that you only have 18 summers with your kids...sure doesn't seem like much in the grand scheme of things! I will always remember this summer of the sabbatical and all the fun memories we made. I hope they do too.

Sabbatical Reflection

And here I am, the very last day of my 8 week long sabbatical from work. I can hardly believe that it even happened at all, and I have to pinch myself at how lucky I am to have received this gift. Now that I am at the end of it, I've realized that that is exactly what sabbatical was for me - the gift of time - which is invaluable to me. When my mom died, it changed my entire perspective on life, and in particular on time. I realized that our time on Earth is so limited and that time is a precious commodity. I decided then, that I would no longer waste my time on people or things that don't matter; instead I committed to spending my time in positive, meaningful ways, with people and on things that add value to my life, not take away from it. While this isn't always possible, I try to be mindful of it and use it as a barometer for gauging situations that I find myself in.

This sabbatical gave me time to spend with my husband, my children, my nieces, other family members, friends, even my neighbors. It also gave me time to spend on my house, doing projects that shape it into our family home, and that gave me a chance to be creative. I had time to read, sleep, exercise, and take inventory of my life both mentally and spiritually. I was able to travel to Europe for 3 weeks and see a little bit more of the world. I had time to make memories with my kids.

While I hate to sound like corporate America, I am walking away with "lessons learned". I won't bother with the minutiae, but basically I am going to try harder to keep a better balance in my life between work, home life and me as an individual. I am going to slow down more and take time to eat meals, sitting down (versus on the go) and not multitasking. I will take more breaks and work less nights. I will remember that my kids are growing up faster than I can keep up with, so I need to live in the present with them, as much as possible.

One last thought I have: while I half-jokingly whine and moan about having to go back to work, I also realize that I am fortunate to go back to a company and a job that does very meaningful work. During sabbatical, a good friend's father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer; a friend was diagnosed with colon cancer; my cousin's friend was diagnosed with breast cancer...the list can go on. My day job is dedicated to finding a cure for cancer, and in the meantime, offering brand new therapies to people who have no other options. My hope is that from clinical trials, these people will also be granted the gift of extra time with their loved ones.

And on that note...countdown to the next sabbatical: T-minus 5 years!

Morton's Warm Springs

One of our favorite places to go during summer is Morton's Warm Springs in Sonoma. It's about an hour away for us but the scenery is beautiful and makes for a nice drive as you wind through vineyards. It reminds me so much of my own childhood summers in Calistoga that I wrote about here.

Morton's has 3 mineral pools and lots of grassy areas for picnicking and barbecuing. It's a great place to spend a warm summer day!

Independence Day 2014

Our 4th of July holiday was a low-key affair with just the summer essentials: swimming, barbecue and fireworks. Happy birthday America!
